Student Union 'Have Your Say!'

For the student union, I decided to volunteer to be in the student say video that would be posted on the Liverpool student union website and will be all over Facebook. The purpose of the video was to get the message across to student that things are going to change within the university thanks to the hard work of the people who work for the student union.
I portrayed the student voice, so I was saying on behlaf of all the student thats there are a couple of things that need to change to make the quality of university better. Issues such as, having all your deadlines at once, not being able to park on campus and other issues regarding landlords and your rights.

I hope that this video will make an impact on the university and things change for the better!

Creative Media Practive - Final Project Presentation

For the Creative Media Practice presentation for our final project, I presented my Prezi to Mark and Ian that highlighted what I did to come to my final ideas for the project. I also wrote on paper what I was going to say during the presentation so I wasn’t just reading off my Prezi. As I have learned in the past that it is better to have little on the presentation and speak more as reading from a presentation doesn't work very well.  I included my research, how I came about using QR codes and how my final piece worked out.

I felt that overall it went quite well and I was glad that all of my QR codes worked. I did not include much research details in my Prezi so I explained at the end that my inspiration for folding my QR codes and sticking them on the map came from some windows that I saw in a museum, where you have the option to open them and read the information inside.I felt that this was more fun and interesting then just reading a bulk of text or in my case just seeing the QR codes stuck on the map as they are.

If i was to do this project again i think i would have expanded on my journey and got a bigger map and made my thread start from Liverpool and then go all the way to America. This would have made my project stronger and more interesting as i could have included my journey in more detail especially with the actual travelling part. I would also include some more about the friendships i made with the international councellors, such as the people i met from Australia who i worked closely with. I would have also written down more on the paper that I was reading from and I also would have added more images into my Prezi to make it more interesting and polished.

However i am pleased with my final project and I hope to gain good marks from it.

Production Project - Documentary Proposal

For the Production Project module, I decided to do a documentary as i love factual documentaries; i feel like you learn a lot from them. I want my documentary to send a message to the audience and be quite hard hitting.
I chose to focus my documentary on the topic of the RSPCA recently becoming more political instead of putting money into their shelters that are in desperate need. I wanted to do it on this not only because it is a current affair but also to make people, especially animal lovers aware of what is going on within the charity.

It was recently leaked by a member of the RSPCA that they were investing thousands into court cases on the badger cull and fox hunting and not putting money into the welfare of the animals, especially when many of their shelters are struggling due to lack of funding.
I wanted to get this message across because it is very important as it will eventually lead to independent animal homes becoming full and being put under strain because of this. Many RSPCA shelters will close down in the future because of lack of money, which not only means the strain on other shelters and charities but also many animals will have to be put down.
Another message I want to get across is to people that are currently or in the future considering getting a pet. Instead of going to a breeder, go to an animal shelter instead to re-home an animal. More people doing this could help save these shelters from being over crowded and also having to put innocent and healthy animals down.
To achieve this, i have a list of people I am scheduled to interview. These include; employees from the RSPCA, Liverpool's local MP, volunteers are the RSPCA and owners of other independent animal shelters.

For my documentary, my aim is to get the real facts and figures on unwanted and homeless animals of today and find out what the plan is for the future to change this and to also find out the future of the RSPCA.

Creative Media Practice - Final Project

For my final project in this module, I chose to create a story using QR codes.
After we were taught how to make them, I felt that they were the most interesting way to be linked to something, instead of using YouTube and Triptychs I came to my decision pretty quickly to do QR codes, the simplicity but effectiveness of them influenced my decision. As well, I wanted to break myself into using these types of digital media slowly because I did not want to put too much pressure on myself so using the QR codes for my project made me confident that I would be able to create something without getting frustrated and stressed because I was familiar with how QR codes worked.

Initially, I started of gathering ideas together for my story by brainstorming and jotting down ideas, the only thing that I felt would be interesting enough and that would be long enough and relevant to me was the 2 months I spent at a kids camp in New York this summer. I had many photo's that told my journey from the start to the end of my time at camp Chipinaw that I felt would fit the brief well.

I was happy with my story decision, so to start off the project, I created a Flikr account so I could take all my photo's from Facebook and organise them in order. I started off by downloading some pictures to start off my journey - I wanted to make it clear to the audience that I was jetting off somewhere out of Europe, to do so I got a picture of a map, plane tickets, a passport and a picture of a plane. Although, just before the pictures I made my very fist QR codes link to the camp leaders website and the camp Chipinaw website so the audience get an initial idea of where the story is going. I found this part quite easy as starting off the story was going to be quite straight forward, although as I carried on creating QR codes for the pictures to follow, I started to struggle with a strong middle part to the story.

I felt that my story would be too long if I did every individual picture a QR code so I decided to make a montage on iMovie with a song over the top. This made it a lot more creative and it also cut down how many QR codes i was going to create. My montage was made up of pictures from the start to the end of my time at camp, I then made another montage on iMovie which was also uploaded to YouTube of a special friendship i had made with a particular person at camp. I felt that this added something extra and more personal to my project that I was able to share with my audience.
For the end of my project, I wanted to finish it off nicely with some images of my last night at camp and the sunset in the Catskill Mountains that I took whilst I was there. I felt that this was a suitable ending for my summer journey.

To present my QR codes, I printed them out in the size of about a 50 pence piece, folded them up and stuck them in a swirly line on a A3 size vintage map of New York to add to my travelling theme. It looked good visually and I liked the fact that you had to open them to retrieve the QR code. I got this inspiration from when I was at a museum in Liverpool and there was a part where you could open up a window to see the information, wether it be a small amount of text or a screen behind the window which played either sound or a short video. I felt that it was a lot more exciting and it engages with the audience better because it requires physical engagement which keeps up attention span, rather than just reading text on a wall or just looking at QR codes as they come.

Overall I feel pleased with my final project for this module. Using QR codes was surprisingly easy and I enjoyed making my 2 movies on iMovie as i was familiar with the software. I look forward to presenting my 'Summer in QR codes' on the 8th.

Creative Media Practice - Interactive Videos

In this lecture we watched a couple of video's on YouTube to introduce us to interactive media. The video gave us options to click which lead to part of the story; you were able to go back if you decided against your first choice.
After watching more examples on YouTube, we were assigned to groups to make our own interactive videos to then upload to YouTube as part of the brief. Our group decided to create and interactive story based on morals and our aim was to give off a positive influence to the audience and to make people aware of what could happen when deciding to take drugs.
We had many question embedded in the video to give people a wide range of choices. We chose to do this because it was quite serious and hard hitting, as many peole may not take the full effects seriously, so the message we want to get across is memorable.

I felt that this is a good way of engaging with the audience and gaining their full attention because they can interact. I will most definitely be using this type of interactive media again in the future, especially because I have not used it before.

Our influences came from this video; it was very strong and we wanted to give a similar message to our audeince.

Creative Media Practice - Isadora

Unfortunately I was not in the lesson when we were introduced to Isadora, so I did not find out what it was..
I did not want to be behind or unknowing what this was seeing as though Mark had mentioned how good it was, so I thought i'd research it so I was in the loop! After looking on a few websites I found that it is a software that manipulates digital video and that can create stunning interactive, sounds and visuals.

I watched a few videos on YouTube and was very impressed with what I saw, I have linked to a video I found on YouTube and also a video on Vimeo which I was really drawn in by. I feel like some of the effects are actually quite freaky and can imagine that it can look amazing. I have not yet had the chance to create my own Isadora project yet as I was not sure if it was software that you have to purchase, however I have downloaded it from Troikaronix and I really look forward to having a go!

Creative Media Practice - QR Codes

A QR code is a quick way of loading information onto your phone. Many QR codes take you to a link which could be a picture, blog, information, a youtube link or a link to any site on the net. It has become a faster way of finding out information just through scanning your phone over the bar code.

In the lesson the task was to make a short story out of 5 QR codes. Our group decided on a story of a missing cat that has a twist at the end. We linked our QR codes to pictures of a missing cat poster, a video of a cats eye view which then led to the cat actually belonging to a witch and the owner dying unexpectidly but left a note saying how much she loved the cat.. This was really interesting to see the QR codes take shape as we linked them together. We just used text for the last QR code although we thought it was going to speak out the text but for some reason it did not work.
I was really happy with how our QR turned out, each one linked to the exact content we had planned and the story of the missing cat worked really well.

I very much enjoyed this lesson because it made me realise that there was so many types of media out there that I wasn't really aware of and I now have learnt about this one and that this is a good way of finding things quickly and directly. I will definitely like to use these again in the future for any projects or maybe party invites! Who knows how creative I may end up with these..
I found the QR codes really easy to scan, all I had to do was download the free I-nigma app which scans the QR code really quickly and then brings you to the content in which it holds. I also really like the fact that the QR code is a complete mystery until you scan it; this makes people curious and therefore more likely to want to scan it. Rather than plain and blunt advertising or information, this gets the user interacting and it is more fun simply because of the mystery factor it holds. Now that the majority of people now have smartphones it means its really accesable and I feel that in the future QR codes will take off and become a lot more popular.
Finally, It was good to see how everyone’s else’s stories came together just through scanning these simple codes.
