For my final project in this module, I chose to create a story using QR codes.
After we were taught how to make them, I felt that they were the most interesting way to be linked to something, instead of using YouTube and Triptychs I came to my decision pretty quickly to do QR codes, the simplicity but effectiveness of them influenced my decision. As well, I wanted to break myself into using these types of digital media slowly because I did not want to put too much pressure on myself so using the QR codes for my project made me confident that I would be able to create something without getting frustrated and stressed because I was familiar with how QR codes worked.
Initially, I started of gathering ideas together for my story by brainstorming and jotting down ideas, the only thing that I felt would be interesting enough and that would be long enough and relevant to me was the 2 months I spent at a kids camp in New York this summer. I had many photo's that told my journey from the start to the end of my time at camp Chipinaw that I felt would fit the brief well.
I was happy with my story decision, so to start off the project, I created a Flikr account so I could take all my photo's from Facebook and organise them in order. I started off by downloading some pictures to start off my journey - I wanted to make it clear to the audience that I was jetting off somewhere out of Europe, to do so I got a picture of a map, plane tickets, a passport and a picture of a plane. Although, just before the pictures I made my very fist QR codes link to the camp leaders website and the camp Chipinaw website so the audience get an initial idea of where the story is going. I found this part quite easy as starting off the story was going to be quite straight forward, although as I carried on creating QR codes for the pictures to follow, I started to struggle with a strong middle part to the story.
I felt that my story would be too long if I did every individual picture a QR code so I decided to make a montage on iMovie with a song over the top. This made it a lot more creative and it also cut down how many QR codes i was going to create. My montage was made up of pictures from the start to the end of my time at camp, I then made another montage on iMovie which was also uploaded to YouTube of a special friendship i had made with a particular person at camp. I felt that this added something extra and more personal to my project that I was able to share with my audience.
For the end of my project, I wanted to finish it off nicely with some images of my last night at camp and the sunset in the Catskill Mountains that I took whilst I was there. I felt that this was a suitable ending for my summer journey.
To present my QR codes, I printed them out in the size of about a 50 pence piece, folded them up and stuck them in a swirly line on a A3 size vintage map of New York to add to my travelling theme. It looked good visually and I liked the fact that you had to open them to retrieve the QR code. I got this inspiration from when I was at a museum in Liverpool and there was a part where you could open up a window to see the information, wether it be a small amount of text or a screen behind the window which played either sound or a short video. I felt that it was a lot more exciting and it engages with the audience better because it requires physical engagement which keeps up attention span, rather than just reading text on a wall or just looking at QR codes as they come.
Overall I feel pleased with my final project for this module. Using QR codes was surprisingly easy and I enjoyed making my 2 movies on iMovie as i was familiar with the software. I look forward to presenting my 'Summer in QR codes' on the 8th.
