Convergence Media Teamwork

Multi-Platform

This weeks lecture consisted of learning about multi-platform techniques. We got into a group of 3 and were given a list of Disney stories to chose from to expand and create a background for the story and to also create a range of second screen devices. We chose the Little Mermaid which we tweaked the story slightly to make it more adult themed.
We decided that the background story would be that once upon a time lots of Mermaids were washed to the shore and killed by sailors and fisherman because they thought they were bad creatures. The remaining Mermaids wanted revenge so every time a sailor or fisherman crossed their paths they would capture and kill them. Firstly we decided to focus on the advertising, so we made profiles of the missing sailors which would be put up on billboards and on buses before the series started, to get people wondering and interested in what this up coming series was about. Then once the series had started, we were going to have a multiple sailor and mermaid profiles on the channel's website and then each week stated which person had been deceased. There was also going to be a blog on the website of clues linking to the following week's episode's deaths.
This was a very interesting task as it was exciting to have a twist on the classes children's story and also the second screen was made to be quite dark and full of thrilling blogs from these fictional characters. Many channels do this to engage the audience with the programme a lot more and to get their full attention and to get them talking about it. Techniques like this make the programme more interesting and memorable which is good for the reputation of the production company.
